In this excerpt from “Everyday Practice Drills for Defensive Toughness & Offensive Readiness”, Coastal head coach Justin Gray demonstrates the “Black Hawk” top wing closeout drill – a high-intensity defensive segment built around physicality, communication, and discipline.
The drill begins with deliberate contact – jamming the ball into the chest, sitting down in a stance, and immediately guarding with purpose. Players must bump, close out, control space, and most importantly, prevent the offensive player from crossing their face.
This segment highlights how intentional adversity in practice builds game-ready defenders. Through controlled contact, clear rules, and competitive reps, players develop edge, accountability, and toughness that translates directly to live play!
