Don Babbitt Throws Resources

These four videos, posted on Coaches Insider, feature University of Georgia coach Don Babbitt explaining different drills he uses with his throwers. There are two for discus and two for shot put.

Watch as Coach Don Babbitt explains, and a thrower demonstrates the proper release when throwing the discus. The discus should come out front and not the back of the hand. Holding the discus at your side and letting it roll out of the hand is a good drill for beginners to emphasize the discus coming out properly. Coach will explain all aspects of the release.

Watch as Coach discusses, and a thrower demonstrates the power position. This is a very important position as 70-75 percent of the discus release speed is generated here. The thrower must set the feet and have a good heel and toe alignment. The line from the right heel to the left toe is usually in the same direction as where the throw will go.

Watch as Coach Don Babbitt explains, and an athlete demonstrates the A-Drill, which is the best teaching drill for the glide. This is a two-part drill that is worked separately making sure the technique is correct before blending them together. Coach covers the split position and the recovery position in detail and also shows examples of mistakes that athletes will make along with the corrections.

Watch as Coach Don Babbitt discusses, and an athlete demonstrates the Stand Throw and the keys to teaching it. The Stand Throw requires different positioning for a rotational thrower than for a glider and Coach will focus on rotational positioning and technique.
